An Aladdin’s cave on our doorstep

Boormans jewellers was established in Knaphill by Walter Boorman in 1930 and he was then joined by his son Bob in 1959 when it became W W Boorman and Son.

In his capacity as a sales rep for a national company, Richard Fairless had been dealing with the shop for over 20 years supplying clocks and watches, so when the chance came up in 2004, he and Jayne bought  the shop. The family business is completed by their daughter Amanda and the family are assisted by part-time staff members, Alison a qualified gemmologist with over 40 years’ experience in the jewellery trade and Charlotte a local artist.

Boormans have maintained their traditional jeweller roots and offer a fantastic range of gold and silver jewellery and dazzling gems to suit all budgets.  There is also good range of every day/fashion/dress watches along with quartz and mechanical clocks.

Repairs to jewellery, clocks, watches are managed by independent workshops but watch straps and batteries for most brands including Tag Heuer, Longines, Gucci, Omega are fitted on site. Boormans can also pressure test most waterproof watches.

Their extensive range of gifts including Disney, Willow Tree, John Beswick, Beatrix Potter, Winnie the Pooh and many more, are sourced from UK fair trade suppliers where ever possible.

You may not know it, but:

Boormans offer a bespoke jewellery making service so for instance,  you could design your own  ring and speak to Amanda and gemmologist Alison, to have something truly unique made for you. Or if you have an older piece that you want remodelled, go and have a chat and be inspired.

(Left to right) Jayne, Richard and Amanda Fairless have owned the shop since 2004.

The Knaphillian caught up with Amanda to ask some questions about their family business and life at closing times.

The Knaphillian (TK):  What attracts you to Knaphill?

Amanda: We enjoy the community spirit with the Knaphill businesses.

TK : What are your hopes for 2019?

Amanda: That the business will continue to grow with Amanda taking over more as Richard and Jayne semi retire from the day to day running of the shop.

TK : What makes you happy?

Amanda: Chocolate!

TK : What is the funniest/strangest things people ask in the shop?

Amanda:  We are often asked if we can put a watch in their battery!!!

TK : What makes your weekend complete?

Amanda:  As the Boorman family before us, we are very involved and committed to our local Church (St. John’s Village church) so our weekends are spent with our family and our regular church activities.

‘Can you still see me’? Cairo, on display amongst the gifts.
